We can dream bigger.

The Alberta Party is a citizens’ movement that is working to make our province the best place to live. Our party was built through a massive citizen engagement project called The Big Listen, which engaged thousands of albertans in a discussion about the future.

The Big Listen revealed that although Albertans are immensely proud and grateful for what we have achieved as a society, it is clear that most believe that alberta can be so much better. Albertans told us to dream bigger and make this province an even better place to live.

Our platform is focused on five core ideas:

  • Rethink healthcare
  • Respect our students
  • Reimagine our democracy
  • Reinvigorate our economy
  • Reinvest in our communities

Our Founding Principles

The Alberta Party is committed to building a policy framework that is based on the following six key values:

Prosperity

We believe that private enterprise and entrepreneurship are the keys to our economic success. The government should foster an environment which facilitates economic investment, reduces red tape and encourages creativity.

Fiscal Responsibility

We believe that government must use public dollars as effectively and efficiently as possible. The government should balance the books and set aside money for a rainy day. This is best accomplished through long-term planning, common sense and transparency.

Social Responsibility

We believe every Albertan deserves the opportunity to succeed. Our government should aspire to provide excellent and innovative public education, public health care, and infrastructure, as well as a compassionate helping hand in times of need. We believe this can be accomplished through responsible use of public funds.

Sustainability

We believe that sustainability must be a core value of government. Rethinking unsustainable practices, making strategic investments in research and technology, and implementing smart policy choices will protect and enhance our environment for future generations.

Democracy

We believe that public business should be conducted in public. Government should ensure that the legislative process is open, fair, transparent and inclusive of the people it governs. Our government should foster debate, actively engage citizens, and make itself accountable to the people it governs.

Quality of life

We believe that a great quality of life requires strong communities. Through support of recreation, sports, arts and culture, government can help to build strong and vibrant communities.

Guidelines for MLAs

We also believe that the role of the MLA needs to be re-examined. The role of the MLA is to engage citizens in a conversation about policies and directions, and not to sell the policies of the government to citizens. We have developed guidelines for Alberta Party MLAs that describe how our MLAs will act differently in the Legislature.

Our Policies in Detail

The Alberta Party has released a series of policies that build on the feedback we heard from Albertans during The Big Listen, and the Policy Directions passed by our members at our 2011 policy conference. These documents provide a summary of our party’s priorities, broken down by policy area.

The seeds of The Big Listen process were planted in February 2010, when members of the Alberta Party united with Renew Alberta to pursue their common goal of a moderate, forward-looking government responsible to the citizens of Alberta. This new relationship gave members of both organizations a vehicle to put into motion their vision of a new mode of citizen engagement; one in which Albertans aren’t talked to, but talked with.

This vision developed into The Big Listen, an ambitious and authentic program of citizen engagement designed to meaningfully connect our party to Albertans. Through this ongoing process, we’ve talked with thousands of Albertans in their homes and communities about their stories, challenges, and hopes for our province. The input from these meetings has been recorded in detail, and forms the foundation of the policy proposals being developed by our member volunteers and put forward by the Alberta Party.
